How to Clear a Loved One's House After a Bereavement
Clearing the home of someone you love is rarely just a practical task. Every drawer and cupboard holds a memory, and the whole job can feel overwhelming when…
Case studies
Three illustrative examples of typical clearances across the North East, showing the care, sorting and planning that goes into each one.
These are illustrative examples based on typical jobs - not specific customers.
A family living out of the area needed to empty a three-bedroom semi-detached house in Gateshead after a parent had died. They were unable to be there on the day, had limited time, and were worried about important papers and sentimental items being lost.
The family sent photos by WhatsApp and we gave a free quote. We collected the keys from the solicitor, arrived at 9am and began by setting aside paperwork, photographs and jewellery in labelled boxes. Furniture in good condition was put aside for charity, electricals were separated for recycling, and the remainder was loaded carefully.
The clearance took about three to four hours. The family received their keepsakes and papers, the house was left empty and tidy, and the keys were returned to the solicitor. Throughout, the team worked quietly and kept the family updated by message. Nothing of personal value was left to chance. See our bereavement clearance service.
An executor needed to clear a terraced home in Durham City so it could be put on the market. The house was full after many years, with a loft and a small yard, and the executor wanted a clear, organised process.
We visited, agreed what the family wanted to keep, and booked a date with notice. On the day we cleared room by room, kept a separate pile for items the executor wished to review, and sorted usable furniture for donation. Metals and electricals were recycled. Because the volume was more than one van trip, a second load was needed.
The property was ready for the estate agent within the planned timescale. The executor was able to focus on the paperwork rather than the practicalities, with a clear timeline throughout. Read about our probate clearance approach.
This job shows how the service adapts to a family's circumstances: a long-distance family, a tight timeline and a house full of memories. The approach is the same whatever the property, and you can read more about it on our how it works page.
A homeowner in Whitley Bay was preparing to downsize. Their garage was packed with old tools, boxes and furniture, and the garden had a shed full of unwanted items and green waste.
We worked from photos and provided a quote. The team removed the contents of the garage and shed, set aside tools the owner wanted to keep, and cleared the garden waste. Usable items went to charity and scrap metal was recycled.
The homeowner had a clear garage and a tidy garden in a single morning. The owner was relieved to see how much was donated or recycled rather than thrown away, and the space is now ready to use again. See our garage clearance and garden clearance services, or ask for a quote.
What happens to your things
We sort every clearance by hand. Good furniture and household items are passed to charity, metals, electricals and cardboard are recycled, and only what’s left goes to licensed facilities.
